Losing a significant amount of weight is one of the hardest things a person can do. I know because I have counseled patients and watched them struggle with cravings, discipline, children, break-ups, breakdowns, horrible bosses and everything in between that threatens to derail their efforts. I also lost over 100lbs myself in my early twenties so I have experienced these pitfalls and distractions personally. But there is one real key to overcoming all of the obstacles that stand in your way and ensures your success towards a happier, healthier you.
Long-term weight loss is a mental game. Ask anyone who has lost a large amount of weight and they will tell you the same. Diet and exercise only work if they have time to, and maintaining that effort over time is the biggest challenge we face when losing weight.
You have to have the right approach to stick with it. Changing the way you view diet and exercise is as important as the diet and exercise itself. As a matter of fact, I just read an article about a woman who recently lost 165 lbs and she pretty much summed it up by saying:
"stop making losing weight or being healthy such a chore! We are moms, wives, daughters, -we have enough chores in these roles. We don't need to make what we do for ourselves a chore. Make this fun. It's your time! Learn to make the gym your happy place. Buy a new workout tank; download some new jams; make friends there and think of them as family."
I couldn't have said it any better myself. We have enough stress bearing down on us everyday that adding a stressful workout routine to your never-ending list of chores almost guarantees your inevitable failure, unless you have the discipline of a Tibetan monk.
Humans aren't pressure cookers. We have to let off some steam or we will explode. And the stress of knowing that you failed and gave up compounds the problem even further. Take your workout routine to a positive place. Know that you are doing something great for yourself and your loved ones. Participate in classes like a team sport, challenging your classmates as to who can keep it up longer. Make it fun!
If you do these things you are almost guaranteed success. And that is what we are all seeking right? Eat healthy and delicious foods, make your workout routine fun, and before you know it, you won't even recognize that healthy, vibrant, and sexy person in the mirror!
